Antique Pendant for Rapier , Western Europe (Italy? Maybe Poland), 1570-90 , for sale.
We are excited to offer this Antique Rapier pendant for sale. Made in Western Europe, this pendant for rapier is from the 16th century. This pendant for rapier is a great addition to any collection and will make a perfect gift.
I bring to your attention a highly artistic pendant for a rapier of the late 16th beginning of 17th century. The main material used to decorate the suspension was a silver thread with gilding. Inner insert is leather and the hook is made of bronze with gilding.
Decorated with the symbols of the city of Warsaw, “Warsaw Siren”. Starting from the 15th century, the technique of gold and silver embroidery began to be used to decorate the clothes of the nobility. The gold embroidery workshops were created for royal, priests, the magnate and even rich merchant courts.
Not only ceremonial costumes, costumes of magnates, gentry, bishops, but also their ceremonial weapons was twitched with decoration. There was a well-known expression “there is a soul lives in the sword of a gentry” and the gentry did not skimp on decorating their weapons. In Western Europe, the main ceremonial weapon of the nobility was a rapier.
Heinrich of Valois, the king of Poland, introduced the custom of wearing ceremonial weapons as usual at the Polish court. This custom lasted until the end of the 16th century.
Our artefact belongs to this period. it was made by order of the gentry from the honour of a noble magnate or courtier. If you describe all the historical events that this beautiful artefact witnessed, you get a fascinating novel.
You can only guess how many noble gentry and brave Cossacks owned this artefact. This item will become the pride of the most exquisite collection or museum display.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity. An opportunity like this comes along once a decade. Collect history!
Perhaps the suspension for the rapier was in the famous Spitzer collection.
“The Spitzer collection has, in the estimation of connoisseurs and amateurs, at least, long been the eighth wonder of the world.
Now and then its possessor has allowed glimpses of it to be seen in exhibitions, but, as a rule, it has been locked and barred against vulgar or elect eyes in his roomy mansion in the Rue Villejuste, Paris, which it stuffs like a sausage from cellar to roof,” reads a short entry in The Collector journal published in 1890. At the risk of stating the blindly obvious, it is no longer the late 19th century.
Today, Frédéric Spitzer, who amassed those thousands of medieval and Renaissance wares, is not a household name. No longer tucked away in Spitzer’s home, your “vulgar” eyes can easily gaze upon Spitzer’s collection in major museums—from the Frick, to the Met, to the British Museum.
But while Spitzer’s fame has faded, his business practices were pioneering and are remarkably familiar to our contemporary sensibilities—well, except that he forged or modified works in his collection and claimed they were authentic.
