The Royal Musketeers ( French: Mousquetaires du Roi ), also the Guards Musketeers ( French: Mousquetaires de la Garde ), the full name of the Musketeers of the Military House of the King of France ( French: Mousquetaires de la maison militaire du roi de France ) are a select French military unit kings in 1622-1775.

In 1600, Henry IV created for his personal protection a select company of “carabinieri”, which included nobles armed with light carbines. In 1622, Louis XIII ordered the replacement of carbines with long-barreled muskets, after which they began to be called “musketeers of the Royal Military House”, or simply “royal musketeers”.

A lot of time and changes have passed since then…

Attempts to restore and finally disband the royal musketeers

Subsequently, two short-term attempts were made to restore this part: in 1789 (dissolved after the fall of the monarchy, in November 1792) and at the beginning of the Restoration, July 6, 1814.

However, the musketeers, newly recruited from emigrants and the most militant legitimists in general (especially former Conde soldiers and Vendée rebels), were surrounded by an army of Napoleonic veterans with such universal hatred that it alarmed Louis XVIII . On January 1, 1816, the Royal Musketeers were abolished.
